I'm getting the ball rolling.
The thought posted was from the movie smoke, in which one of the characters recounts a story of a writer who finished his manuscript. He was dying, wanted a cigarette and ended up rolling the manuscript to smoke it...

I would say a writer writes for others. If a writer writes for him/herself, then they're basically journaling, and then possibly publishing that journal. Now mind you, they may enjoy what they write, like to reread it themself, and get personal gratification from the responses of others. But if no one ever sees it, are they really a "writer"? They may be a closet writer, never showing their work to others, but their closet dream is probably for others to find what they've written, have them enjoy it, and be discovered.

Which begs the question. If you start blogging, but don't let anyone know, is it really a blog or a just a diary? Can a blog be a blog without an audience?
